Go For Broke Day - My Story

Posted by Richard Massafra on

How Sit Up Doggy Treats Got Its Start

Life was throwing lemons at me.  I knew I didn't want to and could work in a corporate setting any longer. There were health issues, there was a calling and desires.

April 5 is National Go For Broke Day.   Although Sit Up Doggy Treats is less than a year old the story goes back a few years.

I started working for a health insurance company in 2000 or 2001 and I was making good money and even liked most of my job. I was saving and getting rid of debt for years.

The reason why I was doing this was my wife Michele has MS.  It was progressive and her symptoms  were progressing.  That was making our lives more difficult.  We had to plan more about taking care of her.

All this time I had a food concession business making fries, funnel cakes and we fried just about everything.   At the end we called the business the Cardiac Cart.  We fried hot dogs, fresh cut fries, chicken and sausage.

I quit my job about 3 years ago to do this full time and couldn't do festivals any more due to Michele and her care needs.  I started making lunch at a couple of different spots and business was picking up with the new unusual menu.

Then it happened one day the trailer crashed as it broke apart as I was towing it.  Thank God no one was hurt as the cart flipped over to the side of the road.

This led me to many different false starts and exploring the waters for things to do.

Then one day I woke up with the crazy notion that I should make dog treats. The rest is history.

I am blessed and favored by God to be where I am today.
